abstract = "This paper presents a simple model to estimate the water balance
for a watershed from within a GIS. The model is based on the
Thornthwaite-Matter water balance and uses rain gage station data
and daily AVHRR images as inputs. The model was applied for the
Ji-Paran{\'a} (RO Brazil) basin at 1km spatial resolution and a
monthly time step, from February 1995 to December 1996. Results
were compared with annual discharge data for 10 sub-basins showing
that, on average, annual evapotranspiration (ET) was sub estimated
by 9%, and water surplus was super estimated by 17%. The ET of the
Ji-Paran{\'a} basin was estimated to be 1166 mm year-1, roughly
3.2 mm day-1, ranging from 1.7 mm day-1 in July and August to 4.5
                         mm day-1 in October.",
